I really need to learn how to use my shaper. Either that or sell it. I have used it to modify a part for my mill but nothing more than that.

If I had space for one, I'd have one. If nothing else it's THE tool for blind broached keyways.
But they are good for much more than that. The face mills on my milling machine can far outperform a shaper for material removal rates and perhaps even flatness (if the shaper isn't run correctly), but there's no other way to get that particular finish.

Go to http://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED203130 where you can download a PDF of the US Navy's Machinery Repairman 3 & 2 manual. Shapers are in chapter 12.
