These cut pretty well (hard stainless) and leave a decent finish. My only concern will be how they hold up. If I get through this one part, they will be worth it.

Yes. Regular files just weren't cutting it (see what I did there?). Plus, I'm still stuck on making a die filer, and these seemed to be the perfect thing to use, since real die files are all but extinct, and they're non directional.

Just don't use too much pressure to get them to cut faster. You'll strip the diamonds right out of the plating. Ask me how I know...

That was my concern also. I have a similar set of diamond coated files but have never used them on steel because of concerns as you stated.

I agree, but I also decided that they were cheap enough to not worry about it. All the regular files I have are too big to use with this small part, so I took a chance.

Yeah, old stuff. I have an old US made dial caliper, and a newer chinese made one. While the cheaper one is good, it doesn't compare to the 50-year-old US made one. Something about that silky smooth feel that the chinese one just doesn't have. It's comparable to the old Mitutoyo, but just not quite the same as old school.
I just looked at the picture above, and while it doesn't seem to look quite as bad as the picture shows, I can't have that old wooden block looking like that. I'll sand and oil it.

I bought my set too late and they came in a red plastic block instead of the wood block.
