Don't worry about the threads in bronze/brass/brazing, in that application you're "golden" Greg.

Seems the consensus is brazing it so we'll give it a go. Now just need to find the time.
Anthony, you mentioned building a dam around it, what material would I use.

I believe reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in damn building Greg Big Grin

I'd get the vice nice and warm first. I stuck mine in the bbq and closed the lid. I left it there whist I brazed it and then close the lid once finished so it could cool slowly.

Graphite plate stock is used to build the dam.. not cheap but can be continually used if treated with care. it can be machined as well. 

I believe if you smoke steel the braze will not adhere to it either, smoking is running an acetylene flame with no oxygen turned on over steel leaving a thick black carbon layer deposited.
