As you tighten the drawbar, it pulls the tool/collet up inside the spindle, what the taper compresses the collet to hold the tool. The mill came with the this chuck and a collet and I already had a MT2 chuck. But to answer your question, the collet has a straight shank and the chuck fits onto the shank. Here's some pics of both chucks. RE: Face Mill - schor - 07-12-2015 Since you are new to this and did not know how to remove the facemill, I have to ask. Did you read the manual/operators guide? That should tell you some basics as well as some maintenance things you should probably consider. On the chucks, you will not be able to use your mt2 chuck since you have an r8 spindle. If the chuck you got with the machine isa straight shank then you would need to use the collet but if it is an r8 shank, then you just use the shank and drawbar. RE: Face Mill - Mayhem - 07-12-2015 That first picture would have been helpful to have included with your post regarding the drill chuck. Grizzly has a video just for you: https://youtu.be/VnXGy_-SAGk Whilst the video is for a drill chuck being fitted to a MT2 arbour, the process for your arbour is exactly the same. Any suggestions on where to get some at a good price? I have a mini-mill that takes R8 collets. I bought one of the Interstate sets that are always on sale plus a coupon and free shipping for a reasonable price ... http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INLMK32?PARTPG=INSRAR2 ... Certainly not top shelf but quality commensurate with the min-mill. I am sure others with more experience will also provide you with [probably better] suggestions. Arvid RE: Face Mill - Thumb - 07-12-2015 Schor, I did find a couple of sentences underneath the belt speed changes but the english is not too good and I was a little confused so that's why I asked. After watching the video I know how the chuck fits on but to me that setup doesn't seem to be that stable, maybe it is, I don't know. Mayhem, that video was the ticket, thanks RE: Face Mill - PixMan - 07-12-2015 I can't believe even China still makes and sells those POS cutters that use lathe turning tools for milling. Something from the late Pliestocene period. Your spindle should have some means of a brake or lock to keep the spindle from turning as you loosen the drawbar at the top. Lefty loosey righty tighty. Loosen the drawbar one or two turns, tap the end of it. Now unscrew the whole cutter and remove it. Loosen all 8 screws holding the four lathe turning tools, save those as "single use" turning tools for the lathe you have or soon will, understanding that as soon as they chip, toss them in the same scrap metal box as the cutter. When you need a true face mill, let me know and I'll help you find a worthwhile one. RE: Face Mill - Charles Spencer - 07-13-2015 I ordered these R8 collets for my Chinese mini mill: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330719644028?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT They seem to be OK. |
