Dan, it seems that your gearbox is in screwcutting mode so shifting the lever is meaningless for what you are trying to achieve. If you read the scale on the lower section it gives you feed rates but it clearly refers to "sliding gears" so until you find out how to change them then you are probably stuck with high feed or screwcutting speeds, it's on the plate !

Found the Edgwick at Tony's site lathes.uk, but its very different from yours. http://www.lathes.co.uk/edgwick/
It does however bear a extremely close resemblance to a 14 1/2" South Bend I previously owned. I recommend obtaining a copy of "How to Run a Lathe" by the South Bend Lathe works as it is probably more than close enough to your machine.

Hi Dan,
There is a very clear reason why the feeds are not working as they should!! The feed shaft is missing. If you look at the feed gearbox below where the lead screw comes out, there is a boss where another long shaft should run through the saddle and to the end bracket where the leadscrew is pivoted at the tailstock end, Without this you are using the leadscrew and halfnut to feed (not a good idea), which means you are limited to screwcutting speeds rather than feed speeds. Unless that is, that this is an Edgwick that did not have a feedshaft, which all the pictures I can find of Edgwicks clearly show a leadscrew and a feed shaft. try taking the halfnuts out of gear, then start the lathe, and with the lead screw running, turn the star wheel on the apron, and see if the sliding or surfacing feeds work. Can you take a picture of the side of the apron where the half nut lever is, then I will be able to tell you more. Edgwicks were quality lathes, and usually only the simplest (crudest) lathes feed off the leadscrew.

Hi Dan, just done a bit more reading, and I think that lathe is an Alfred Herbert model, badged as Edgwick, as Nowhere can I find a pic of an Edgewick like that one. Where in the country are you?

This is an early conehead plain bearing lathe, I guess there is a flat belt and different sized pulleys under the round cover on the headstock, trying to find some pics of it, no luck so far. Where are you in the UK?

Changed me mind again, this is a pre 1930 model, before their involvement with Herberts, I will do some more research and get back to you.
