As long as we're on the subject of these cutters, are the inserts for this tool proprietary to Walter or are there other sources for them?

Ed

Come on Ed, that's like asking............

Ed,

Just about all name-brand cutters are proprietary these days. Some of the carbide insert tooling makers (Iscar) have even started making proprietary lathe tools.

I've got something cooking to get a load of steel-cutting inserts for these cutters for dirt cheap, the same LNGX130708R-L55 grade WKP35S that you see in my cutter. It'll be up to a week before I have a definite answer, but I'll let you know.

Nothing wrong with tractor tires if you need to plow some fields. I need to plow some steel. Big Grin

I went ahead and bought the R8-1" shell mill holder that Ed had found on eBay. It appears to have been made in Canada, but that isn't the most important feature for me. I prefer the fact that the keys are fastened on from the bottom, effectively "captivated" as soon as a cutter is installed.

All the others I found showed the keys were screwed on from the side, much weaker.

Regarding the origin of your R8 holder I'm not sure if it was MADE in Canada. I'm familiar with Sowa, they had a distribution outlet in the suburbs just down the street from one of my favourite watering holes in the suburbs of Montreal, Canada.
I read up a bit on them due to your post and found "Sowa represents a large number of companies known worldwide".
So if you do find out that they actually did manufacture your holder I'd like to know. Smile

Well, I agree that it might well be Chinese made though from the looks of it in their photos the quality appears to be far better than the cheap Chinese ones offered by Tools4Cheap.net, CDCO and so many other eBay sellers. I decided to take my chances with it because I do own a couple others from Jeff Beck @ Tools4Cheap.net and though they're not bad I wanted better for the quality of this cutter.

So when do we get a video of that tool making chips?

As soon as I get the holder, and find a workpiece to make or a piece of scrap to murder. Heck, I'll make a video of the 3" 45º face mill cleaning off stock too!
