I don't know what the deal was with that chuck, unless it needed to be opened farther because of the angle of the shaft.Exactly the way I saw it Tom, he had to open the jaws as far as the spindle bore (or farther) because of the weight of the victims body, even then it took help to lift him and extract the rod. I'm still shivering with the thought. Steve RE: Lathe Safety - eightball - 12-11-2013 Tom we had an old timer at work that lost a finger because he was wearing gloves and using a long piece of sandpaper on a shaft. Fortunantly a coworker was beside him when he got caught and shut the lathe down. The only time i wear gloves around equipment is when im cleaning up and nothings running. RE: Lathe Safety - TomG - 12-11-2013 It's all just common sense, but unfortunately common sense seems to be a scarce commodity these days. I had someone suggest that I wear gloves on one of my tool grinding videos and the resulting discussion dragged on for weeks. Fortunately most of the responders viewed it as a bad idea. I'm still trying to figure out a good way to make a safety video illustrating the hazards of loose clothing around machinery, but this video is hard to beat. Tom RE: Lathe Safety - eightball - 12-12-2013 They came out with a glove policy where I work. Gloves were mandatory when you came through the gate. We fought it very hard in the machine shop. Unfortunantly during our battle , a worker in one of our canadian mills got hung up in a lathe because he was wearing gloves. They imediately banned us for wearing gloves in the shop around rotating equipment. RE: Lathe Safety - stevec - 12-12-2013 See what us Canucks do for you guys down in the U.S. of A. There is someone we all know that I would like to volunteer to be your actor in this video Tom! Otherwise, you could always ask Mythbusters if you could borrow Buster. RE: Lathe Safety - TomG - 12-12-2013 Buster would be a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure I could make him curse the day he was made. Tom |
