RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - Mayhem - 05-05-2013 Well - not today's project but next weeks will be to strip the 3 phase motor on my lathe which has a noisy bearing. I was half way through single point threading a 7/16-14 thread to make the carriage lock when it went from sounding nice and smooth to sounding like a rock concert! Rather than risking further damage by collapsing the bearing, I turned it off, removed the belts and continued threading by turning the lathe by hand. Boy am I glad that I only had 2 more passes to get the nut to fit and only 25mm of thread length! RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - TomG - 05-05-2013 It must be the month for bad bearings. I've been nursing one in the head of my mill that has reached the point where it needs to be addressed. Maybe tomorrow. Tom RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - dallen - 05-05-2013 actually I didn't do this today, but worked on it for a couple of days after squiring it a couple weeks back. Its a small set of Staking Tools used in watch repair, the box was pretty filthy so I had some Tung oil left from the rifle project so I decided to clean this up some. Sanded it down with some 220 grit paper the started laying on the oil, with a rub down after each coat with 0000 steel wool, what you see in the second photo is what it turned out to look like, sorry no starting photo, the inside is original no finish. The set was made in Germany. DA RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - EdK - 05-05-2013 I had to go into work yesterday and I ended up bring some work home so that's what I've been working on today. I think I need to get my work stop built for my vise. Ed [attachment=5188] [attachment=5189] RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - TomG - 05-05-2013 Nothing too exciting for me today. I made a couple of hinges for the Cowl Induction system on the Chevelle and got that annoying hole in the hood plugged up. It isn't operational yet, but at least it looks complete. Believe it or not, the car was actually clean yesterday, but there is a ton of pollen in the air so it looks like crap today. Tom RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - shipto - 05-05-2013 Finally have something to contribute to this topic I went to car boot and picked up a rusty cam vice for £3 and spent the rest of the day stripping, cleaning and painting it. RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - f350ca - 05-08-2013 Not so much what I did but what I found. As near as I can date 1954 made in Canada. Was sitting at the dump today. Brought it home and it runs and sews like a charm, the light even works. Need to re glue the base. Wow, I remember my mom having one just like that when I was a kid. Even at an early age, the way the bobbin winder automatically kicked out when it was full of thread fascinated me. That was about the same time I took my grandmothers wind-up alarm clock all apart to see what made it "work". She wasn't pleased..... RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - Tony Wells - 05-08-2013 Well, nothing IN the shop, but for the shop I picked up my first work from a new customer. This guy is a sales and service company for air compressors. So there will be lots of shaft work, re-make, build up and turn, keyways, who knows. Got a little TIG work on some housing and a couple of shafts where a bearing had seized and spun. I'll build them up and turn them. Best part is that he's only about 10 minutes from me, and is tired of feeling as though he is getting taken to the cleaners by the shop he has been using. So it may work out just fine for both of us. Didn't work in the shop today because I was at the hospital doing some side work on a security door mechanism, and updating some wiring for the cath lab they are remodeling. Pays well, and is always air conditioned. RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - dallen - 05-08-2013 (05-08-2013, 08:34 PM)f350ca Wrote: Not so much what I did but what I found.
