Repaired a camshaft today. Appears the gear was not a shrink fit on the cam and rattled back and forth till it ruined the keyway in the cam. Rather than replace the cam we indicated the bottom of the old key way then rotated it 180 deg and cut a new one. Then remarked the gear with a new timing mark 180 deg from the old one.

The cam measures 1.001 (surprisingly no wear from the gear moving on it), the bore in the new gear 1.000 so I suggested heating it up with the torch and slip it on the cam which we had clamped on welding bench. Asked him what locates the cam in the block, must be the aux drive gear on the far end of the cam he says. So we put the gear on, nice fit. Next morning while I'm still having coffee he arrives to assemble the engine. Realizes he forgot the keeper plate that goes on the end of the cam before the gear. Warmed the gear up again before trying to use a puller on it, you guessed it, SNAP. Newer gear has arrived.

Nice idea moving the key way Greg, and snap! type issues show up in almost all of my projects. Most recently, I went to great langeth,s to obtain the correct bolt spacing for the 011 and newer Subaru upper strut mounts and after ordering in mounting plates taking all relevant measurements and milling out the spacers, I shipped them to a customer only to find out they don't fit.
So now I'm on a rather hasty quest to find a wrecked or dismantled 011 Sube to get correct measurements.
