Shapers who else has one? - aametalmaster - 03-24-2012 I am old school and just love shapers. Learned how to run them in the early 70's in metal shop then a year later in Vocational Machine Trades where we had bigger ones. Didn't know at the time they were almost obsolete until i got in a few real shops. So anyway here is my little 7" SBL prob from the early 50's since it isn't the newer oil pump model from the 60's. I paid 300 bucks for it 3 blocks from my house. I looked for years online for one but they were too far away. I made the round corner stand since i wanted the old time look. Enjoy...Bob RE: Shapers who else has one? - TOM REED - 03-24-2012 (03-24-2012, 02:38 PM)aametalmaster Wrote: I am old school and just love shapers. I am going to build onr from Gerard's plans once they are completed. Too bad the Chinese don't make a reasonably priced copy of a 10 to 12 inch model. tom RE: Shapers who else has one? - doubleboost - 03-24-2012 I have seen a shaper being used A very versitile bit of kit I have been looking on ebay Problem is when they turn up i never have any money One day it will happen John RE: Shapers who else has one? - Tony Wells - 03-24-2012 I have a 24" G & E that for a time I cut a great many internal splines with. I have milling capability, so I don't use it for flat work in general, but internal work, you bet! It weighs about 8,000 lbs. It was a WWII USN piece. RE: Shapers who else has one? - ScrapMetal - 03-24-2012 I bought a 16" Queen City shaper a couple of months ago and am in the process of getting it back to working condition. Here's a link showing the "progress". Queen City Shaper -Ron RE: Shapers who else has one? - EdK - 03-24-2012 I'd love to have one also and will end up making one, like Tom will, from Gerard's plans. Ed RE: Shapers who else has one? - RobWilson - 03-25-2012 Hi Lads I have an 8" Boxford shaper . and a few recent shaper jobs angle plate for the CUB lathe faceplate . And a keats angle plate for same lathe . Shapers are slow ,, but the tooling is cheap and you get a great flat finish ,,,,,,,, i would not part with mine ,, and in my humble opinion they still have a place in the home shop. Rob RE: Shapers who else has one? - EdK - 03-25-2012 Rob, That's so cool. It looks like a ground surface. Ed RE: Shapers who else has one? - RobWilson - 03-25-2012 Cheers Ed It is very close to looking like a ground finish ,,,,The shaper is also great on softer materials ,,,,,,,,,,,,, i once had to make a few copper cubes for a welding machine about 2x2x2 and got an excellent finish on the copper . Rob RE: Shapers who else has one? - DaveH - 03-25-2012 Rob, Very nice DaveH |
