Mill Engine Cylinder Casting
#1
Hi
Lads
I made use of the sand cores i made last week and cast my cylinder
[Image: IMG_4071.jpg]
This picture shows the sand core in the mould
[Image: IMG_4076.jpg]
The small round bit is where the metal is poured in (sprue) the rectangulsr bit is the riser
This feeds the casting as it cools

This shows where the riser has been cut off (nice clean solid metal)
This is always a welcome sight
[Image: IMG_4085.jpg]
Very happy with it
[Image: IMG_4061.jpg]
I cast this yesterday with poor results
[Image: IMG_4062.jpg]
Nasty void in the riser (scrap casting)
At least you can always cut it up and re melt it

I could not resist machining at least one face
Good clean metal

John,
Excellent job mate Smiley-signs107 Worthy

I'm glad you explained the difference between the sprue and the riser Thumbsup 'cause I'd be temped to pour the metal in the "big hole" SlapheadSlapheadSlaphead

Any idea why it looks "silvery" on the outside?

Great bit of casting, don't suppose you did a video Smiley-dancenana

Nice work John. It's been a long time since I've had the fun of machining a casting.

I assume by the blackening around the casting, that you use an oil tempered sand? Is it your own recipe or do you buy it already mulled. And what about flux? I know chlorine type degassers are used for aluminum, but do you also use some sort of flux for the bronze?
