Tool Gloat - US trip
#11
Well as Ken has alluded to, I picked up some tooling whilst I was in the US last month.  In particular, his comments relate to the tooling gifted to me by Russ (wrustle).  I need to preface this post by saying that I had never actually met Russ before and his generosity has (quite honestly) baffled me.  He told me I am doing him a favour and I could never thank him enough for this:

Everything you see on that blue towel Russ gave to me.  There are lathe tool holders, drills, spiral point taps, 1-3/8" down to 3/16" end mills.  Those on the right are solid carbide.  The big ball end mill is 3/4" and the largest drill is a whisker under 1".  I've shared some of this with my friend and I'm actually looking to see if I can mill down the parting tool block to suit his lathe.

Russ - I cannot thank you enough  Worthy

I was there with Darren when we visited Russ and was also so very impressed that he offered up those tools. Darren offered me to pick any I wanted but I declined because I have tools like most of them already.

A good deed, indeed!

Probably because he knows you will use them and appreciate them Darren.  Smiley-eatdrink004

I gave one of my older flex shaft tools to a friend of mine the other day for that very reason. Because I know he will use it instead of trying to flip it on eBay or craigslist just to make a buck.

Well you have given me a lot of tooling too Ken (not to mention your time and expertise), so I wanted to try and pay some of that back.

Thanks Willie.

I would rather give it away than try to earn some money off of it.  In fact, I have given some of it to a friend of mine who owns the small lathe that he (conveniently) stores in my shop.

The little threading tool holder will likely go to the guy I am buying the surface grinder from.  The two holders that take the 332 trigon inserts may also go to him as well.  Part of me said "what if I buy a smaller lathe?" and the other part says "what if I get hit by a bus..."

I believe in the pay it forward approach to life...

As some of you know I was recently in the US on business and took the opportunity to buy some tooling.  Here is my latest haul:

The 135° split point screw machine drill sets in fractional (1/16"- 1/2" x 1/64") and metric (1.0 mm - 10.5 mm x 0.5 mm plus 3.3, 4.2, 6.8 and 10.2 mm), and the 8" x 1/2" x 1-1/4" Norton 32A46-IVBE grinding wheel were from Enco with a 40% off discount code.  The asymmetrical v-block was my project whilst I was visiting Ken.  The rest of the tooling (T-slot cutters, wheel adaptor, insert tooling and inserts) were either gifted to me or sold to me by Ken at ridiculously low prices.

What isn't shown in the picture is the hands on experience that is the most valuable thing to have brought back with me.
