The manual calls for grease on the knee and table zerks, i thought way oil was the normal lube for this and the lead screws. Are grease zerks the same as oil zerks? Thinking about getting an oil gun and using way oil. Any thoughts? Also, any way to get the old grease out without taking the table and knee off?

Ive had a little time here and there to start cleaning up the ole girl. It had a lo to crud packed on and in it. The quill return spring is shot, I have it wound as tight as it can go, still no return. I was brain storming and thought, maybe I can adapt a quill return spring assembly from a drill press. Just gotta find one with the right dimensions and think about it a little more.

I really enjoy the simplicity of vintage machinery, bet you can't wait to get back into her original grey. Any idea what year it was made?

What does that return spring look like? Maybe you can wind your own out of some fresh spring steel.

TomG, LMAO on the gray, I told my boss I wont run it green;) Gettin close to paint time, tough to find time to work on it each day. I think it was made in the late 50s early 60s, but that is just a guess. That is about the time period they set up the shop that it came out of.
The spring is flat, about 1/2" 5/8" wide, small hole in one end for a retaining pin, then a "keyhole" type hole in the other end for a larger retaining pin. I may go that route as well. For now I just want to get it done and into service. Then Ill mess with the spring. We are limited as to what vendors we can buy from so that makes it tough sometimes lol...... I will think of something, not a real big deal.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I could obtain a graduated collar for the right hand side of the table, when they adapted power feed to it they must have tossed it. Id like to put one back on so I have them at both ends of the table.
Aslo, has anyone modified 30nmt tapers to fit this 30mm spindle? They would need to have the set screw pockets cut into them, trying to figure out the best way to do that, curious if anyone has a jig or fixture set up for this, or photos....Thanks

monkers,

I'm not sure what you're referring to here. What is a 30nmt taper spindle and what is a 30mm spindle? 17428

I suspect you meant a NMTB 30 spindle but I have no idea what a 30mm spindle is.

the south bends had a 30MM taper, same as 30NMTB except the 30MM has two set screw pockets cut into it
